meta<browser/> is an all-in-one solution to retrieve metadata for Movies and TV shows through the available APIs of themoviedb.org (TMDb) and thetvdb.com (TVDb).  It was primarily created to provide metadata for what I believe is one of the best Vista Media Center plugins created, Media Browser, but can be used by any application that utilizes MyMovies.xml for movies or Series.xml and corresponding metadata folder for TV Episodes.

Main Features of meta<browser/>:

Catalog Movies and TV in one view

  • Add multiple locations that span multiple hard drives
  • Support of Media Browser’s Virtual Folders
  • Filter/Search for a specific movie or episode
  • Easily locate media with missing information

Easy and Accurate metadata retrieval

  • Search TMDb or TVDb to find an exact match
  • Ability to update only missing information in your metadata
  • Ability to update only specific movies, episodes, and fields
  • Download posters, backdrops, banners, and even actor images

Process all Movies and TV

  • Get ALL metadata and images in one swoop, then go back and fine tune!
  • A two step process which lets you confirm matches from TMDb and TVDb before you process
  • Selective updating (for example only download actor images for all movies)
  • Process only a specific TV Series or a single Season

Folder Monitoring

  • Drop a movie or episode into a monitored folder and meta<browser/> will add it to your Media Collection list
  • Auto fetch of all metadata and images when a new movie/episode is detected
  • File/folder changes automatically reflect in the Media Collection list
  • Can use FileSystemWatcher for NTFS file systems or a timer for Samba shares

Episode Renaming

  • Rename your files to something more readable (for example rename Heroes.S01E01.blah.mkv to Heroes – S01E01 – Genesis.mkv)
  • Renames your subtitle filenames along with the associated episode xml filenames

Episode Sorting

  • Specify a location to monitor and use it as an “Episode DropBox”
  • Specify a destination location for the episodes to be sorted/moved
  • Will automatically create folders based on a user defined pattern
  • Will automatically download all metadata, images, and rename your episode filename
  • Supports .dvr-ms sorting, no need to rename the recorded dvr-ms file, meta<browser/> will read its embedded metadata and get the correct episode information for it

Episode Thumbnails

Movie Renaming

  • Rename your movie’s containing folder and/or movie file to something more readable (for example rename \\Server\Movies\Dark Knight\Movie.mkv to \\Server\Movies\Dark Knight (2008) [Blu-Ray]\Dark.Knight.mkv
  • Supports renaming of multi-part movies

Windows 7/Vista DVD Library

  • Creates DvdId xml files used by Media Center
  • Creates corresponding cache files at your specified location
  • Centralize & sync metadata for all your locations by sharing your DvdInfoCache folder

Custom Filtering and Grouping

  • Filter your Media Collection to find exactly what you’re looking for
  • Save filters for future use
  • Run “Process All” only on the items currently filtered
  • Group your collection by Date Added or Media Type
